Burnishing works differently to a full mechanical polish.
Instead of grinding down through the concrete to expose the stone underneath, we polish the existing cream layer, which is the fine cement paste at the surface, to a smooth and even sheen. There’s no aggregate showing through, so the colour and texture of the floor stay consistent from one end of the room to the other.

There are two ways to finish a burnished floor, and the right one depends on how the space is used and what you want to spend.
Mechanical burnish
Machine polishing brings the surface cream layer up to a hard, lasting shine. It needs little to no sealer and holds its finish well under daily foot traffic, so it’s the better long-term option for busy areas.
Topical burnish
A lighter surface polish is paired with a topical sealer applied over the top. It’s the more affordable option and still gives a clean, uniform look. Keep in mind that the sealer is a surface layer, so it will need refreshing over time as it wears.
Is Burnished Concrete Right for Your Adelaide Home?
Burnishing works best on internal floors where you want a plain, contemporary surface rather than a stone-textured one, and where the slab is already in reasonable condition.
If you’d like to see stone in the floor, grind and seal lets you choose the level of exposure. If the existing concrete is cracked or stained, a micro topping can be laid first and then burnished for the same uniform finish.
