A micro topping is the option when the existing surface isn’t concrete you want to show.
It’s also the answer when the concrete underneath is too damaged or uneven to grind and polish directly. We prepare the existing surface, whether that’s tiles, timber or worn concrete, and install a high-strength micro topping over it at a minimum depth of 3mm. Because it’s a genuine overlay rather than a coating, it can be finished the same way a polished concrete floor would be.
This makes micro toppings a practical way to get a polished concrete look on a floor that was never poured concrete in the first place. It’s also a way to refresh a slab with cracking, staining or unevenness that grinding alone wouldn’t solve.

When a Micro Topping Makes Sense in Adelaide

Micro toppings are also a popular choice in older Adelaide homes with dated tiled floors. Rather than going through the cost and mess of removing tiles, the topping can be installed over the top for a modern, seamless concrete look.

Finishing Your Micro Topping
Once cured, the topping can be finished to suit the space.
Burnished
Polished to a smooth, uniform surface with no stone showing, for a clean, contemporary look.
Ground and sealed
Ground to your chosen stone exposure, then sealed in matte, satin or gloss with a topical or penetrating sealer.
The topping can be burnished for a uniform, stone-free look, or ground to your chosen stone exposure and completed with a grind and seal in matte, satin or gloss.
It’s worth noting that a topping isn’t always needed. If your existing slab is structurally sound and you want a high-gloss floor, mechanical polish may achieve it directly. For outdoor concrete that’s in good shape but simply faded, a clean and colour seal is the quicker fix. For pool surrounds on sound concrete, a honed finish is worth considering. We’ll let you know which option makes sense when we assess the floor.
If you’d prefer real exposed stone rather than a smooth, uniform finish, a polished concrete overlay or veneer is poured thicker with real aggregate, then ground and polished like a new slab.
